Dry Bath






A dry bath, also known as a block heater, is a laboratory device used to heat samples in test tubes, microcentrifuge tubes, or vials. Unlike a water bath, which uses water for heat transfer, a dry bath uses a solid block of metal (usually aluminum or another heat-conductive material) to provide even and consistent heating without moisture. It's a versatile tool for molecular biology, biochemistry, and clinical labs.

Key Features of a Dry Bath:



  1. Interchangeable Heating Blocks: Dry baths have removable blocks with wells designed to fit various sizes of tubes, from microcentrifuge tubes (0.5 mL, 1.5 mL) to larger test tubes and vials. Some models offer customized blocks for specific applications.

  2. Accurate Temperature Control: Most models feature precise digital controls that allow users to set and monitor the temperature, often ranging from ambient to 100°C or higher.

  3. Uniform Heating: The solid block ensures even heat distribution, which is critical for consistent results in experiments.

  4. Timer Function: Some dry baths include a timer, allowing for automatic shut-off after a specified period.

  5. Compact and Portable: Dry baths are typically compact and easily fit on a benchtop, making them suitable for small labs.

  • DNA/RNA Extraction: Heating samples during various stages of nucleic acid purification.

  • Enzyme Reactions: Maintaining a stable temperature for reactions such as restriction digests or PCR setups.

  • Protein Studies: Denaturing proteins at specific temperatures for analysis in SDS-PAGE or other experiments.
